It is one of the first things to check, together with the needles at that position and the yarn tension. A bent carrier changes the height at which yarn meets the hook.
Do plating positions need a different carrier?
Yes. Plating carriers keep the two yarns in a fixed order as they enter the hook, which a plain carrier does not do.
