A stop motion watches one yarn end. When the yarn breaks or goes slack, the detector arm drops or the circuit opens, and the machine stops before the fault has run into metres of fabric. On a machine with many feeders this is the difference between a short stop and a roll of second quality.
Stop motions are also used at the creel and the feeder positions to catch a cone running out before the end reaches the needles.

Why does the machine stop with no broken yarn?
Usually the detector is out of adjustment, dirty with fly, or the yarn tension at that position is too low to hold the arm up. Clean and reset before replacing the unit.
Can stop motions be added to an old machine?
In most cases yes. What matters is a mounting position at each feeder and a control circuit that can take the signal. Send photos of the machine and the control box.
