Reducing Second Quality From Machine Faults

Most second quality is not a knitting error, it is a fault the machine ran on with. Detection and lint control are where the fabric is saved.

The Working Method

  1. Restore stop motion coverageEvery feeder should stop the machine on a broken or slack end. Detectors that were bypassed during an old repair are common and easy to miss.
  2. Fit or repair needle detectionA broken needle puts a running line down the whole roll. A working detector stops the machine at the fault instead.
  3. Control lint at sourceFly settles in the tricks and ends up in the fabric. Dedusters and fan cleaners remove it before it packs.
  4. Keep the needle bed lubricatedDry running wears hooks and latches, and worn needles drop stitches. Metered lubrication is more consistent than hand oiling.
  5. Change parts as setsA machine running mixed wear produces fabric with mixed loop length. Full sets on a planned cycle cost less than the downgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should we start if the budget is limited?

Detection first. A stop motion or needle detector that works turns a whole roll of second quality into a short stop.

How do we know detection is actually working?

Test it deliberately. Break an end at a feeder and confirm the machine stops. Bypassed circuits only show up when they are tested.
