What This Product Is For
904L stainless steel plate is a highly alloyed austenitic grade with very low carbon, high chromium, sufficient nickel and an addition of copper. It is specified where dilute sulphuric acid and other harsh corrosive conditions would attack 316L. Plate is supplied in hot rolled, cold rolled and fine rolled condition from 0.3 mm up to 350 mm thick, in lengths as required.
Key Benefits
- Copper addition and 4.0 to 5.0 percent copper content give real resistance in dilute sulphuric acid
- Carbon held at 0.03 percent maximum, so heavy plate can be welded without sensitising
- Thickness band from 0.3 mm to 350 mm covers cladding sheet through to tube sheet forgings
- Three rolling conditions let the surface match the duty, from fine rolled finish to heavy hot rolled plate
- Length made as required, so a vessel course can be cut without a circumferential joint

Who It Is For
- Pressure vessel fabricators working in acid service
- Chemical and fertiliser plant engineers replacing failed 316L equipment
- Heat exchanger builders needing thick super austenitic plate
- Stockists carrying 1.4539 plate for European projects
Problems It Solves
- 316L plate that thins and pits in dilute sulphuric acid
- Weld decay in thick section austenitic plate
- Sourcing gaps between thin sheet and very heavy plate
- Grade confusion between 904L, N08904 and 1.4539 on international orders
Application Scenarios
- Vessels and ducting handling dilute sulphuric acid
- Flue gas desulphurisation and scrubber internals
- Heat exchanger tube sheets in aggressive process service
- Pickling lines and acid storage in metal finishing plants

- Elongation 35 percent and density 8.24 g per cubic centimetre
Materials
- 904L super austenitic stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Hot rolling
- Cold rolling
- Fine rolling
- Cutting to size
Quality Control
- Chemistry checked against the 904L ranges for chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper
- Carbon confirmed at 0.03 percent maximum before release
- Mechanical results recorded for yield, tensile and elongation
- Thickness measured across the plate against the ordered dimension
Customisation Options
- Hot rolled, cold rolled or fine rolled condition chosen on the order
- Length cut as required rather than to a fixed mill length
- Thickness selected anywhere between 0.3 mm and 350 mm
Use Guide
- Quote the grade as 904L, N08904 or 1.4539 so the mill and the inspector are reading the same specification
- Use an over alloyed filler when welding 904L so the weld metal is not the weakest point
- Pickle and passivate after welding before putting the plate into acid service
- Keep the plate off carbon steel racking to avoid iron contamination
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 316L stainless steel plate | 904L carries far more nickel, molybdenum and copper, which is why it survives dilute sulphuric acid where 316L corrodes |
|---|---|
| 2205 duplex plate | Duplex is stronger and cheaper, but 904L is the better pick for reducing acids because of the copper addition |
| Hastelloy C-276 plate | C-276 handles wet chlorine and hypochlorite that 904L cannot, so 904L is the economic choice only when the acid is not chlorine bearing |
