About This Category

What Stainless Steel Is Actually For

Stainless steel is specified when the cost of corrosion, contamination or maintenance outweighs the cost of the material itself.

Grade choice is driven by the corrosive environment and by whether the part will be formed, welded or machined afterwards.

Stainless Steel Questions

Which grade resists chlorides best?
Molybdenum-bearing grades resist pitting better than standard austenitic grades. Describe the environment and it will be matched to a grade.
Can you supply a specific surface finish?
Yes. Finish is specified with the order, which matters most on visible architectural work.
Is stainless steel magnetic?
Austenitic grades are largely non-magnetic; ferritic and martensitic grades are magnetic. It is not a quality indicator.
