What Blockboard Is Actually For

Blockboard is built around a core of edge-glued softwood strips, sandwiched between veneers. The solid core gives it stiffness and light weight that no fibre panel matches at the same thickness.

It is the traditional choice for doors, long shelves and table tops, where deflection over a span matters more than surface uniformity.

Why choose blockboard over plywood?

Stiffness per kilogram. For long unsupported spans the solid core resists deflection better than an equivalent thickness of plywood, and it is lighter.

Can the core strips show through the face?

Only if the face veneer is too thin or the core was poorly jointed. A heavier face veneer and a properly sanded core prevent it.

Is blockboard suitable for wet areas?

Not in standard glue classes. Specify a WBP or melamine glue line and seal all edges.
