Model and Die Preparation
From impression to a sectioned working model whose dies seat the same way every time.
Where the Errors Actually Come From
Everything a laboratory makes is measured against the model. If the die does not return to the same position, the margin the technician waxes is a margin that does not exist in the mouth. This workflow covers the equipment and consumables that make that repeatability routine.
Model and Die Preparation Step by Step
Each stage links to the categories that supply it, so an order can be built around the process instead of a product list.
Mix
Vacuum mixing removes air before it is poured, instead of chasing bubbles afterwards.
Pour
A bench vibrator drives trapped air out of the mix and away from the margin surfaces.
Base
Model base moulds give every model the same height and form, which saves stone and makes mounting predictable.
Pin
A pin drill unit places dowel pin holes perpendicular and repeatably across a full arch.
Seat
Brass, alloy or twin dowel pins, with or without sleeves, index each die in position and rotation.
Section
Plaster saws and separating discs part the model without chipping the margin.
Trim
A model trimmer squares the base so the model sits flat and articulates correctly.
What You Should End Up With
- Dies that reseat identically through the whole case
- Margins that survive from model to finished restoration
- Consistent model form across technicians and across cases

Model and Die Preparation: Practical Questions
Where do most model room errors come from?
Air in the pour and pins that are not perpendicular. Both are equipment problems with equipment solutions, not skill problems.
Do I need a pin drill unit, or is hand pinning enough?
Hand pinning works for single dies. Across a full arch, the cumulative error from hand-drilled holes is what makes dies rock.
Can you quote the whole workflow as one order?
Yes. Tell us which stages you are equipping and we will quote the equipment and the first round of consumables together.
