What is the difference between a brushless and a brush micromotor?
A brushless motor has no carbon brushes to wear, so torque stays constant and there is no brush replacement interval. A brush motor costs less to buy and the brushes are a cheap consumable, but torque drops as they wear. Brushless models in this category include the Marathon Multi 600 and Marathon Handy 700.
What does 35K or 45K mean on a handpiece?
It is the maximum speed in revolutions per minute the handpiece is rated for, so 35K is 35,000 rpm and 45K is 45,000 rpm. The handpiece must be matched to a control box able to drive it.
How often should carbon brushes be replaced?
It depends on hours of use and load, not on a calendar. The practical signal is torque: when the motor slows noticeably under a cut it used to make easily, inspect the brushes. Labs running a full day usually keep a spare set on the shelf.
