Oil Water Separators and IMO MEPC.107(49)
What the standard requires of bilge water treatment, and how a three stage separator meets it.
Why the equipment exists
Every ship generates oily bilge water in the engine room and no ship may discharge it untreated. The oil water separator is what makes the discharge lawful, and the performance standard it has to meet is IMO MEPC.107(49). This is a port state control item, which means the consequence of getting it wrong is a detained vessel rather than a maintenance note.
Three stages, three jobs
Our units treat engine room bilge oil sewage through a first stage of inclined plate gravity and coalescence separation, a second stage of fibre filtration, and a third final stage. Splitting the treatment this way keeps the load on each stage within what it can actually hold, which is what stops the unit from breaking through when the bilge is dirtier than usual.
Sizing the unit
Capacities available are 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5 m3/h. The right one comes from the vessel's bilge generation rate and how often you want to run the separator. A unit sized too large cycles instead of running at its design point, which does not help the effluent quality.
Electrical supply
Motor ratings are 1.1kW, 1.5kW and 2.2kW according to capacity, on 380V, 415V or 480V at 50Hz or 60Hz. The control panel and all necessary accessories are supplied with the unit, so the installation does not wait on a separate control order.
Documentation
CCS, BV, LR and DNV certificates are available against the unit. Specify the society on your order and the certificate is applied for at the same time, so the paperwork arrives with the equipment rather than after it.
