Hair Systems For Beginners The Complete Start Guide
A thin skin hair system uses a transparent polyurethane base to mimic the look of bare scalp, with the thickness determining how natural it appears and how long it lasts. Here's what each thickness actually means in daily use.
What A Thin Skin Base Actually Is
A thin skin hair system is built on a sheet of polyurethane, not lace or monofilament. The material is transparent and takes on the colour of your scalp underneath, so the hairline reads as skin instead of mesh.
The number listed - 0.02mm to 0.12mm - is the thickness of that sheet. This number affects how the unit looks, how long it lasts under handling, and how easy it is to clean adhesive off after removal.
What Each Thickness Is For
There is no single best thickness. The right one depends on how you live, how often you remove the unit, and how much you value invisibility versus durability.
- 0.02mm to 0.04mm is the thinnest and most like real scalp, but it is fragile and wears out faster
- 0.06mm to 0.08mm is the most common choice for daily wear and first-time users - natural look with good resilience
- 0.10mm to 0.12mm is the most durable, handles repeated removal and cleaning best, but shows slightly more at the front

How The Hairline Construction Affects Realism
The way hair is attached to the front determines how natural the hairline looks. A knot is a dark dot on a transparent surface, which can give the unit away in daylight.
V-loop fronts have no knot at all - the hair is looped into the poly and comes back out. Bleached knots lighten the colour so they read as scalp. V-loop is the cleanest result and allows the front to be combed straight back.
The Trade-Off Nobody Should Hide From You
Polyurethane is a sealed surface. It does not breathe, so it runs warmer than lace or mono bases. In hot climates, during outdoor work, or after exercise, this can be a daily discomfort.
If breathability matters more than a perfectly invisible front, a Swiss lace, French lace, or fine welded mono base is the honest alternative - even though the hairline may show slightly more mesh.
Fitting And Looking After One
Poly is the easiest base to maintain day to day. The smooth surface holds both tape and liquid adhesive well and wipes clean after removal.
- Attach with double sided tape or liquid adhesive directly onto the poly
- Clean adhesive residue off after every removal to keep the next bond strong
- Use a gentle wig shampoo and avoid alcohol-based products near the front
- Cut the base back to your own template before the first fitting
- Have the hair cut in on your head so the front blends with your natural hairline
Ordering One That Fits
Stock thin skin units are commonly 8 by 10 inches with 6 inch Indian Remy hair, and they ship within 24 hours on working days. If your head is between sizes, send a template or your measurements and we cut the base before it ships - this adds 2 to 5 working days.
Colour is ordered by code, from 1# jet black through 613#, with grey blends like 1B10#, 1B30#, 1B65#. Ordering by code ensures the next unit matches this one.

Questions On This Topic
How long does a thin skin unit last?
It depends on the thickness, how often you remove and reattach it, and how carefully you clean the adhesive off. Thinner bases wear out sooner than thicker ones, which is the trade you make for the look.
Can I swim or shower in it?
Poly handles water better than lace because there is no open mesh, but the bond is what decides it. Ask about a stronger adhesive if you swim regularly, and rinse the base afterwards.
Will it damage my scalp?
Used sensibly it should not. Keep the scalp clean, take the unit off to let the skin breathe, and remove adhesive properly rather than pulling at it. We are a manufacturer, not a clinic, so speak to a doctor about any scalp condition.
Is thin skin good for a first hair system?
0.06mm to 0.08mm is a sensible first unit: it looks natural, it survives learning to attach it, and it is the easiest base to clean while you get into a routine.
Can I get a thin skin base in a custom size?
Yes. Send a template or your measurements. Custom production runs 8 to 10 weeks on the regular schedule, with rush options down to 15 to 23 days.
Do you sell thin skin units wholesale?
Yes. Wholesale pricing starts at 10 or more items, and OEM packaging is available if you resell under your own brand.
