Waste segregation
Segregation happens before composting proper. The machine separates organic waste to ease the composting work and manage waste through the processing stages. Biodegradable waste is usually segregated into wet and dry fractions, which degrade at different rates and are therefore treated differently.
Waste shredding
A shredder is one of the accessories of an organic waste composting machine. It crushes organic waste to a particle size of roughly 8–10 mm and handles vegetable waste, fruit and fruit skins, leaves and tree branches, and cooked or uncooked meat, among other acceptable organic waste.
Dewatering
Since organic waste is 70–80% water, removing moisture is the single largest contributor to volume reduction before the microbial stage begins.
Why it matters at purchase
These functions decide how much manual handling the installation needs. A machine with integrated shredding removes a separate station and the labour that goes with it.
