Loading and shredding

Organic waste — food waste, garden waste, dry leaves — is loaded into the machine through a hopper. A shredder reduces it to smaller components, because the smaller the feed size, the faster the conversion.

Bio-culture and absorbent

Bio-culture and an absorbent such as sawdust or dry leaves are added to the waste. Bio-culture is a mixture of microorganism cultures — naturally occurring bacteria and fungi along with enzymes — that accelerates aerobic composting. It is free from toxic or hazardous components and preserves the vital nutrients and organic matter in the waste.

Fermentation

The material enters a horizontally aligned fermentation tank powered by gear motors. Retention time depends on the nature of the compost required.

Retention times

Pre-compost is obtained in one day; dry compost in six to seven days. Adding sawdust decreases the curing time and helps produce dry compost sooner. The whole conversion runs in 21–24 hours for the primary stage.
