Product overview

What This Product Is For

Inconel 600 is a nickel chromium alloy with good oxidation resistance at high temperature. It resists chloride ion stress corrosion cracking, high purity water corrosion and alkali corrosion, which is why it turns up in heating furnace components, chemical and food industry equipment, nuclear engineering and ignition electrodes. It is supplied as pipe, plate, strip, round bar, flat bar, forgings, wire, profile and extruded parts.

Key Benefits

  • Good oxidation resistance at high temperature for furnace hardware
  • Resists chloride ion stress corrosion cracking, which is the usual failure mode for austenitic stainless in hot chloride
  • Stands up to high purity water corrosion, a requirement in nuclear circuits
  • Alkali corrosion resistance for caustic handling equipment
  • Nine product forms available from one grade

Who It Is For

  • Furnace and heat treatment equipment builders
  • Nuclear and power plant engineers
  • Food and chemical process equipment manufacturers
  • Buyers specifying UNS N06600

Problems It Solves

  • Chloride stress corrosion cracking in hot austenitic stainless components
  • Scaling of stainless furnace hardware at temperature
  • Corrosion of equipment in high purity water circuits
  • Sourcing nine different product forms in one nickel chromium grade

Application Scenarios

  • Heating furnace components and retorts
  • Chemical and food industry process equipment
  • Nuclear engineering circuits running high purity water
  • Ignition electrodes and high temperature fixtures

Materials

  • Nickel chromium alloy 600

Manufacturing Process

  • Hot working
  • Cold working
  • Forging
  • Extrusion
  • Wire drawing

Quality Control

  • Chemistry checked against the nickel, chromium and iron ranges for N06600
  • Density and physical constants confirmed against the alloy data
  • Dimensional inspection for each product form
  • Certificate issued with the heat and condition recorded

Customisation Options

  • Any of the nine product forms cut or drawn to your requirement
  • Extruded parts and profiles produced to drawing
  • Wire supplied to your diameter and spool specification

Use Guide

  • Use alloy 600 where the duty is hot oxidising rather than strongly acidic
  • Note that oxidation from dissolved air alone will not passivate the surface against organic acids at some inorganic acid concentrations in saturated air
  • Weld with a matching nickel chromium filler
  • Select the product form early, since forgings and extruded parts carry longer lead times than bar
Comparison

How It Compares With the Alternatives

Inconel 625Alloy 625 adds molybdenum and niobium for higher strength and pitting resistance, while alloy 600 is the simpler nickel chromium grade for high temperature oxidation duty
310S stainless steel310S is a cheaper high temperature stainless, but alloy 600 resists chloride stress corrosion cracking and alkali attack that 310S does not
Nickel 200Pure nickel is better in strong caustic, alloy 600 is better where oxidation resistance at temperature is the main requirement
FAQ

Inconel 600 Alloy N06600 Questions

What is the nickel content
72.0 percent minimum, with chromium between 14.0 and 17.0 percent.
What product forms are available
Pipe, plate, strip, round bar, flat bar, forgings, wire, profile and extruded parts.
What is the density
8.47 g per cubic centimetre.
Where is alloy 600 typically used
Heating furnace components, the chemical and food industries, nuclear engineering and ignition electrodes.
Does it resist chloride stress corrosion cracking
Yes. The alloy resists chloride ion stress corrosion cracking, high purity water corrosion and alkali corrosion.
Is it suitable for organic acid service
Not on its own. Oxidation from dissolved air alone is not enough to guarantee passivity against organic acid attack at certain inorganic acid concentrations in saturated air.
