What This Product Is For
Type 301 is a chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel that reaches high strength and ductility by cold working rather than by heat treatment. It is not hardenable by heat treatment. In the annealed condition it is non magnetic, and it becomes increasingly magnetic as it is cold worked.
Key Benefits
- Strength is built by cold working, so the level can be tuned to the part rather than fixed by an alloy choice
- High strength combined with retained ductility
- Round bar to 1200 mm diameter and square bar to 800 x 800 mm covers very large sections
- Hexagonal bar from H8 to H100 mm for fastener and fitting blanks
- Ten ASTM specifications plus EN 10088-3 support both American and European projects
Who It Is For
- Fastener manufacturers working from hexagonal stock
- Spring and pressing shops needing cold workable austenitic bar
- Machine shops producing high strength stainless components
- Buyers specifying to EN 10088-3 as well as ASTM
Problems It Solves
- Needing higher strength than annealed austenitic bar can deliver without changing to a martensitic grade
- Parts that cannot be heat treated after forming
- Very large diameter sections that most stockists do not carry
- Specification mismatch between ASTM fastener standards and EN 10088-3
Application Scenarios
- Spring and clip components formed from cold worked bar
- Structural fasteners made from hexagonal bar
- High strength machined parts that cannot be heat treated
- Large section shafting turned from oversize round bar

Technical Features
- Chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel
- High strength and ductility attained by cold working
- Not hardenable by heat treatment
- Non magnetic in the annealed condition, increasingly magnetic with cold working
- Available as round, square and hexagonal bar
Materials
- 301 chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Hot rolling
- Cold drawing
- Cold working to strength
- Cutting to length
Quality Control
- Chemistry confirmed against the 301 chromium nickel composition
- Cold worked condition recorded so the delivered strength level is known
- Diameter and section measured on each bundle
- Length verified against the customer specified cut
Customisation Options
- Round, square or hexagonal profile
- Length 1000 to 12000 mm or customer specified
- Cold worked condition selected to suit the required strength
Use Guide
- Specify the required strength level, since it comes from the amount of cold work applied
- Do not plan a hardening heat treatment, as this grade is not hardenable that way
- Expect magnetic response to increase after cold forming
- Quote the ASTM or EN 10088-3 specification the part is designed to
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 304 stainless bar | 301 is designed to be strengthened by cold working, where 304 is the general purpose grade used mainly in the annealed condition |
|---|---|
| 410 stainless bar | 410 is martensitic and hardenable by heat treatment, while 301 is not hardenable by heat treatment and gains strength only by cold work |
| Annealed 301 | In the annealed condition 301 is non magnetic, and it becomes increasingly magnetic as cold working proceeds |
