What This Product Is For
316 stainless steel bar carries high nickel and chromium, which gives it oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance and high temperature resistance. Stainless steel begins to soften above 800 C and the allowable stress then falls continuously, with a maximum service temperature of 1200 C. Bar is supplied hot rolled and cold drawn in round and square sections, black, peeled, bright or polished.
Key Benefits
- High nickel and chromium content for combined oxidation, corrosion and acid alkali resistance
- Solid solution strengthening lifts strength as carbon content rises
- Hot rolled and cold drawn routes for both heavy and precision sections
- Four surface conditions so machining stock can be minimised
- Round and square profiles from 1/4 inch and 15 x 15 mm upward
Who It Is For
- Machine shops producing corrosion resistant parts
- Equipment manufacturers in food and chemical sectors
- Maintenance teams replacing corroded carbon steel components
- Distributors stocking 316 bar in both profiles
Problems It Solves
- Loss of strength when components run above the softening point of the wrong grade
- Corrosion of 304 parts in chloride bearing service
- Excess machining stock when black bar is bought instead of peeled
- Waste from fixed length bar on short production runs
Application Scenarios
- Machined parts for chemical and food equipment
- Components running at elevated temperature
- Shafting and fittings in corrosive service
- Structural square bar inside process plant

Technical Features
- High nickel and chromium content for oxidation and corrosion resistance
- Austenitic chemistry based on chromium and nickel with molybdenum, tungsten, niobium and titanium additions
- Softening begins above 800 C with allowable stress falling continuously
- Maximum service temperature 1200 C
- Strength improved by solid solution strengthening as carbon content rises
Materials
- 316 austenitic stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Hot rolling
- Cold drawing
- Peeling and grinding
- Polishing
Quality Control
- Chemistry confirmed for chromium, nickel and molybdenum
- Diameter and section measured against the ordered profile
- Surface checked as black, peeled, bright or polished
- Straightness and length verified before bundling
Customisation Options
- Round or square profile
- Length 1 to 12 m or customised
- Black, peeled, bright or polished surface
Use Guide
- Do not design for continuous load above 800 C, since allowable stress falls continuously from that point
- Use peeled or bright bar where finished diameter is close to stock size
- Choose 316L instead if the part will be welded and not solution annealed
- Keep tooling free of carbon steel contamination during machining
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 316L stainless bar | 316L is the low carbon version and is the safer choice for welded assemblies, while 316 carries slightly more carbon and strength |
|---|---|
| 304 stainless bar | 316 adds molybdenum, which is what carries it through chloride service that pits 304 |
| 317 stainless bar | 317 has slightly higher molybdenum again and is used where 316 still pits |
