What This Product Is For
316L is widely used in the chemical industry for its corrosion resistance. It is a derivative of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel with 2 to 3 percent molybdenum added, and further grades have been derived from it, including 316Ti with a small titanium addition, 316N with a small nitrogen addition and 317L with higher nickel and molybdenum. Most 316L on the market is produced to American standards, and steel mills generally hold the nickel content toward the lower end of the range for cost reasons.
Key Benefits
- 2 to 3 percent molybdenum gives the corrosion resistance that keeps 316L in chemical service
- Round bar up to 900 mm diameter covers forged shafting as well as small machined parts
- Hot rolled and cold drawn routes with four surface conditions
- MTC, CE, ISO and PED documentation available
- Shipping by air, express, rail, road or sea from Shanghai
Who It Is For
- Chemical equipment manufacturers
- Machine shops turning corrosion resistant components
- Buyers who need PED or CE documentation for EU delivery
- Distributors stocking 316L bar across a wide diameter range
Problems It Solves
- Corrosion of 304 machined parts in chemical service
- Large diameter bar that most stockists cannot supply
- Missing EU documentation that holds up a shipment
- Uncertainty about nickel content when buying to American standards
Application Scenarios
- Machined components for chemical process equipment
- Pump shafts and valve internals in mild acid service
- Fasteners and studs in corrosive plant
- Forged blanks turned from large diameter bar

- Hot rolling
- Cold drawing
- Peeling and grinding
- Polishing
Quality Control
- Molybdenum content confirmed in the 2 to 3 percent band
- Nickel content checked against the specification rather than assumed
- Diameter and straightness measured on each bundle
- MTC issued against the heat, with CE and PED documents where ordered
Certification
- MTC
- CE
- ISO
- PED
Customisation Options

- Black, peeled, bright or polished surface
- Shipping mode chosen from air, express, rail, road or sea
Use Guide
- Confirm the nickel content on the certificate, since mills often hold it toward the lower limit
- Order peeled or bright bar when the finished diameter is close to the stock size
- Ask for PED or CE documents at order stage for EU deliveries
- Plan orders around the 1000 kg minimum
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 316 stainless bar | 316L is the low carbon version, which is what protects a welded assembly from sensitisation |
|---|---|
| 317L stainless bar | 317L is derived from 316L by increasing nickel and molybdenum, and is chosen where pitting resistance has to go further |
| 316Ti and 316N | 316Ti adds a small amount of titanium and 316N a small amount of nitrogen, both derived from the same 316L base |
