How Electric Porcelain Is Made in Shangbu

The production sequence that has run in Shangbu Town, Luxi County, for generations, from raw material store to finished insulator.

From Raw Material to Mud

Shangbu Town in Luxi County was home to the former state-owned Pingxiang Electric Porcelain Factory, and its process is the one the district still works to. Raw materials are held in open sheds, crushed in the raw material workshop, then mixed into mud. The mud is wrapped in filter cloth and pressed to force out the water.

Forming the Blank

Workers remove the dried mud and take the porcelain clay bar from the machine, then deliver the clay to the billet making position. Workshop hands cut the clay into blanks. It is physical work, and the blank stage is where the dimensional consistency of the finished unit is established.

Why the District Matters

Luxi electroceramics was recognised at the Jiangxi Luxi Electroceramics Achievements and Cooperation Exhibition of China, held in Beijing on 17 November 2018 to mark the 40th anniversary of Reform and Opening Up. Zhaotong manufactures in Xitang, Pingli, Shangbu, in the middle of that production district.
