Why Buyers Specify Spool Insulators
Secondary racks are high-volume, low-glamour hardware, and dimensional drift between supply batches is what causes trouble on the pole. Both spool sizes here follow the ANSI dimensional references so replacements seat in existing racks.
Who It Is For
- Distribution utilities running secondary networks
- Service connection crews
- Wholesalers supplying rack hardware
Core Advantages
- 13.6 kN and 18.2 kN transverse strength
- Wet flashover published for vertical and horizontal mounting
- 0.5 kg and 0.55 kg per unit
- Grooved body seats the conductor at a dead-end
Where It Is Used
- Low voltage secondary racks
- Service drops to buildings
- Street lighting conductor supports

Spool Insulators Questions
Why are two wet flashover values given?
A spool performs differently by orientation: 12 kV wet vertical and 15 kV wet horizontal. Use the figure matching your rack.
Which size should we stock?
ANSI 53-2 at 13.6 kN covers standard secondary work; ANSI 53-3 at 18.2 kN is for heavier dead-ends. Many utilities stock only one.
Will they fit our existing racks?
They follow the ANSI dimensional references. Send your rack or clevis drawing and we will confirm the fit before you order.
Does a chipped spool matter?
Yes, particularly at the groove, where a chip can cut into conductor insulation. Reject chipped units before fitting.
What happens to spools removed from service?
Porcelain can be ground for use as filler in refractory material or mortar once the metal hardware is separated for scrap.
