A wire spring clip in 65Mn manganese spring steel, made for assemblies where the clip is opened and closed repeatedly rather than fitted once. The alloy is chosen because a clip that is used daily needs fatigue life more than it needs anything else.
65Mn resists the gradual relaxation that makes a frequently opened clip feel loose after a few months.
Forming, heat treatment and plating all happen here, so the clip that leaves is the clip that was sampled.
Wire diameter and leg geometry are adjusted at sampling until the clip feels right on the actual component.
Open the clip only to the extent fitting requires. Over-opening sets the legs and permanently lowers the grip force.

Against a stainless clip of the same shape, 65Mn costs less and has better spring behaviour, but relies on its plating for corrosion protection.
