The coil body absorbs the deflection, so the clip can open far wider than a bent-leg design and still return.
High carbon wire gives significant grip from a compact coil, which matters where the clip has to be small.
Adding or removing coils adjusts the force without changing the clip's outline, which is useful when the envelope is fixed.
Support the coil body when fitting so the deflection goes into the coil rather than into the legs. Levering on the legs alone defeats the design.
