Is a large sphere made from one piece
No. It is made from formed panel sections welded together, with every seam ground level before polishing. Done properly the joints do not read at all, which is the whole test of a sphere.
How are spheres fixed so they cannot move
Either a welded base pad bolted to a foundation, or a purpose made ring seat. Both are drawn and agreed before fabrication.
