Carbon Steel Hemispheres

Spun half balls with a 45° welding groove up to 16mm thick the starting point for a fire pit ball or a welded sphere.

Overview

Spun carbon steel hemispheres are formed from a single sheet, so there is no seam across the face. The 45° welding groove is the important detail: it makes the weld between two halves clean, and it is easy to grind and polish afterwards, which is exactly what a fire pit ball or an ironwork sphere needs.

Stamp pressed hemispheres cover the small sizes with a smooth surface that takes powder coating. Hand assembled hemispheres remove the mould limit entirely, so any size from ∅200mm upward can be made, with visible seams that are ground burr free.

Production Methods

The forming route decides the size range, the wall thickness and whether the seam ever shows.

Spinning

An entire steel sheet is formed by spin moulding. This is the thickest option and the easiest to weld into a sphere.

  • Thickness 2mm to 16mm (14GA to 5/8 inch)
  • Size ∅89mm to ∅3500mm
  • 45° welding groove
  • No visible welding seams on the surface
  • Standard mould limit

Stamping press

The sheet is shaped by deforming it with a die. Smooth surface, suits powder coating for art design.

  • Thickness 1mm to 3mm (20GA to 12GA)
  • Size ∅19mm to ∅700mm
  • No visible welding seams
  • Standard mould limit

Assembling

Sheet is developed, bent to leaf shapes and welded by hand into a complete hemisphere. No mould limit, any size.

  • Thickness 1mm to 6mm (20GA to 3GA)
  • Size ∅200mm to ∅3500mm
  • Visible welding seams, burr free
  • No standard mould limit

Who This Category Is For

  • Metal artists building their own fire pit balls
  • Blacksmiths and iron craft workshops
  • Sculpture fabricators
  • Industrial customers needing thick formed heads

Problems It Solves

  • Welding two halves into a true sphere by eye. The 45° groove aligns and fills the joint correctly.
  • Assembled hemispheres are hard to close accurately. Spun hemispheres are the right choice if you plan to weld the sphere yourself.
  • Plasma cutter capacity limits. Pick a thickness below your machine's maximum cut to avoid heavy burrs.

Why Buy From Maoping

  • Seamless face on spun hemispheres up to 16mm
  • Any size above ∅200mm by hand assembly, no tooling cost
  • ∅600mm (24 inch) is the most economical size to ship by courier for prototyping

Application Scenarios

  • Fire pit balls
  • Welded sphere assembly
  • Ironwork and sculpture
  • Formed heads

Carbon Steel Hemispheres FAQ

Spun or assembled for a fire pit ball?
Spun. It is machine formed, effectively seamless, has the 45° welding groove and reaches 16mm thickness. Assembled hemispheres are hand made with visible seams, max 6mm, and are harder to close into a sphere yourself.
What thickness do most fire pit customers buy?
6mm (3GA) is the common choice, but check your plasma cutter's maximum cut first. If your machine cuts 6mm, choose 4mm or 5mm to avoid burrs.
What size hemisphere should I order for a prototype?
∅600mm (24 inch). It balances useful surface area against the billable weight that DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT charge on a bulky package.
Is there a seam across the face?
Not on spun or stamped hemispheres. Hand assembled hemispheres have visible seams, ground burr free.
