TPU vs PVC vs NBR Layflat Hose and How to Choose

The three materials are not grades of the same thing. They differ in temperature range, pressure capability, chemical tolerance and standard length, and those four figures usually settle the decision.

Temperature Decides First

PVC layflat hose is rated -20°C to 70°C. TPU runs -50°C to 80°C. Nitrile rubber covers -30°C to 100°C, and with an EPDM liner the hot water hose reaches 150°C. If the duty falls outside -20°C to 70°C, PVC is already out.

Length Changes the Joint Count

PVC layflat hose is supplied in 20 m and 50 m lengths. TPU layflat hose is supplied in 200 m. On a one kilometre run that is the difference between roughly twenty joints and five. Every joint is a potential leak and a pressure loss.

Chemical and Oil Exposure

TPU is oil and chemical resistant, which is why it is specified for fuel transfer and frac water. Nitrile rubber resists oil, chemicals, UV and ozone, which is why it is used for compressed air where compressor oil carries over. Plain PVC is specified for water.

How the Wall Is Built

TPU layflat hose is made by extrusion through the weave: the TPU is forced through the woven polyester so cover and lining bond to each other through the weave rather than being glued to its surface. That bond is what stops delamination under repeated pressure cycles. Jason developed this construction in 2015.

A Simple Selection Rule

Use PVC for water in moderate conditions where cost matters. Use TPU where pressure, cold, abrasion, chemicals or run length are real constraints. Use nitrile rubber where the hose lives outdoors, is handled constantly and must not need a maintenance routine.

FAQ

Common Questions on This Topic

Is TPU always better than PVC

No. For plain water at moderate temperature and pressure, PVC does the same job for less money. TPU earns its cost on pressure, cold, chemicals and long runs.

What does through the weave construction mean

TPU is extruded through the woven polyester so cover and lining bond to each other through the weave, rather than being adhered to the outside of it.

Which material is best for compressed air

Nitrile rubber, because it handles the oil carried over from a compressor and resists UV and ozone in outdoor service.
