Suction Hose and Discharge Hose Are Not Interchangeable

What Happens on the Inlet Side

A pump inlet is under negative pressure. Atmospheric pressure outside the hose is trying to crush it. A layflat hose has no structure to resist that, so it flattens, the impeller is starved and the pump loses prime. A rigid PVC helix embedded in the wall is what keeps the bore round.

What Happens on the Delivery Side

On the discharge side the pressure is internal, so the hose is being inflated rather than crushed. A woven yarn reinforcement between cover and liner carries that load, and the hose can collapse flat when it is not in use, which is what makes it storable.

The Hose That Does Both

The fabric reinforced suction hose adds a polyester fabric layer to the rigid helix, so the wall carries vacuum on the inlet and pressure on the discharge. It is the one product in the range that can serve both sides of a pump, at the cost of extra weight and stiffness.

Fitting the Coupling Correctly

On helix hose, the clamp must seat between two helix turns, never on top of the crown. A clamp tightened over the helix deforms it, and the deformation becomes the point where the wall collapses under the next full vacuum.

Choosing Length by Where the Pump Can Stand

Suction lift falls with distance and bends, so the shorter and straighter the inlet run, the better. But a pump sitting on a collapsing bank is a bigger problem than a few metres of lift, which is why our 8 and 10 inch suction hose is supplied in lengths to 30 m.
