Check the Carton Before It Is Opened

Once a carton is open the evidence is gone, so the first checks happen while the consignment is still sealed. Photographs at this stage cost nothing and settle any later question about condition.

• Seal intact and consistent across the consignment rather than varying between cartons
• Labels printed rather than applied over another label
• Part number on the carton matching the purchase order exactly including suffix
• Serial on the carton label legible and recorded before opening

Verify the Serial With the Manufacturer

The authoritative check is the manufacturer's own portal, which will report whether the serial is recognised and what entitlement it carries. This is the check that distinguishes a supply problem from a cosmetic one.

Doing it before payment clears, or at minimum before the unit is installed, is what makes the result actionable. A serial queried after installation is a much more expensive conversation.

Compare the Unit Against the Label

Once open, the physical unit should agree with what the carton claimed. The checks are quick and they catch the substitutions that matter.

Power It Up and Record What It Reports

A bench power up takes a few minutes and produces the information that will be needed anyway. The software version, the port inventory and any boot messages are all easier to capture on a bench than in a live rack.

For servers this extends to the installed drive and memory inventory, which is the practical way to confirm a node was built to the specification ordered rather than to something adjacent.

Know What To Do if Something Is Wrong

Discrepancies are much easier to resolve while the consignment is intact and recently arrived. The sequence below keeps the options open.

• Stop unpacking the remainder of the consignment
• Photograph the carton, the label and the unit before moving anything
• Record the serial and the specific discrepancy against the order line
• Raise it with the supplier before installing any part of the consignment

Hardware supplied here is seal checked, serial recorded and verified on the manufacturer portal before despatch, and the serial list is issued in advance so this check is a reconciliation rather than an investigation.
