A support contract is bought once and used on the worst day of the year. The level and the name it is registered under both matter.
A hardware warranty and a vendor support contract are different products that are often conflated on a purchase order. A warranty covers a failed unit. A support contract covers the things that determine how quickly the service is restored.
An estate can run without a contract until the day it cannot, and the day it cannot is usually a security fix that is only available to entitled customers.
Cisco service contract part numbers encode the response level, and the codes are more readable than they look once the pattern is clear. Product pages on this site list the contract SKUs available against each router and switch.
| Pattern | Coverage | Typical Fit |
|---|---|---|
| 8X5XNBD | Business hours, next business day replacement | Branch sites with a spare on the shelf |
| 8X5X4 | Business hours, four hour replacement | Sites where a day of downtime is not acceptable |
| 24X7X4 | Around the clock, four hour replacement | Production sites running outside business hours |
| 24X7X2 | Around the clock, two hour replacement | Core infrastructure and data centre |
| OS variants | Adds onsite engineer attendance | Sites with no local technical presence |
Applying one blanket level across an entire estate usually means overpaying at the edge and underbuying at the core. Set the level per site against what that site can tolerate.
This is the single most consequential detail and it is decided at registration rather than at purchase. A contract registered under a reseller name entitles the reseller. The organisation that owns the outage then has to go through a third party to use something it paid for.
For managed service providers and integrators the same logic applies in reverse: contracts for hardware deployed at an end customer should sit with that customer, so the entitlement survives a change of provider.
Support contracts supplied here are written under the end customer name as standard rather than as an option that has to be requested.
A contract that starts on the date of shipment rather than the date of installation burns coverage while the hardware is still in a box. On a phased programme where the last site is commissioned months after the first delivery, this can be a significant share of the first year.
Where a rollout is staged, coverage start dates should be discussed before the order rather than corrected afterwards.
Estates that have grown by project end up with contracts expiring across the whole year, which turns renewal into a continuous administrative task and makes lapses likely.
The exercise is worth doing once. After it, renewal is a single decision each year rather than a series of surprises.

The choice is rarely about quality. It is about entitlement, traceability and what happens eighteen months after the invoice is paid.
Checks that cost minutes on arrival and save a great deal later. Most of them can be done before the carton is opened.
A support contract registered under a reseller name is of limited use to the organisation that owns the outage. Entitlement is written under the end user name.
An integrator carries the risk between quoting a client and receiving the hardware. Firm pricing and a written lead time per line is what makes that risk manageable.
The programme needed identical customer premises equipment supplied continuously for years and shipped directly to end customer sites
The branch edge had reached end of software support and the estate had drifted into four different router models bought across eight years
It depends on the serial history for that specific unit. It should be checked against the serials before the order rather than assumed afterwards.
Entitlement stops, which usually means software access stops first. Reinstatement is possible on most platforms but generally costs more than continuous coverage would have.
Rarely. The useful approach is to set the level against what each site can tolerate, which means core and data centre carry a higher level than a branch closet with a spare on the shelf.
The organisation that owns the outage. For hardware deployed at an end customer that is the end customer, so the entitlement survives a change of provider.
Send the design constraint rather than a part number. An engineer will come back with options and the trade offs.
