How To Make A Hair System Template

A hair system template is a paper or fabric outline of your head shape, used to customise the base size and fit. Here is how to make one that works.

What A Template Actually Is

A template is a flat copy of your head's shape, made from paper, fabric, or a thin plastic sheet. It is used to match the base size and shape of your hair system to your natural hairline and head contour.

It is not a measurement tool, but a physical guide. The template shows where the hairline should start, how the base should curve around the ears and crown, and how much overlap is needed at the back.

How To Make One That Fits

Start with a clean, dry head. Use a soft measuring tape to mark your natural hairline, the highest point of your crown, and the back of your head where the hairline ends.

Take a piece of paper or thin fabric (like a cotton handkerchief) and lay it flat on your head. Trace the hairline with a pencil or marker, following the natural edge of your hair.

Press the paper gently around the sides and back, matching the curve of your head. Mark the point where the back of the head ends, and the sides where the ears are.

  • Use a pencil or fabric marker - avoid pens that bleed through
  • Make sure the paper is not stretched or folded when tracing
  • Keep the template flat when you remove it - do not bend it
  • Label the front, back, left, and right sides clearly

Why A Template Matters For Custom Bases

A custom base is cut to your exact shape. Without a template, the base may be too big, too small, or misaligned at the hairline.

Even a 1-inch difference in base size can make the unit look off or feel tight. A template ensures the fit is consistent with your natural head shape.

  • A template helps avoid a unit that pulls at the sides or rides up at the back
  • It ensures the hairline sits exactly where you want it
  • It is especially important for skin bases, which are less forgiving of misalignment

How To Send It For Custom Production

Take a clear photo of the template from above, with the front side up and the labels visible. Use a flat surface and good lighting.

Email the photo to [email protected] with your order details. Include your preferred base type, hair length, colour code, and any special requests like V-loop front or bleached knots.

We will use your template to cut the base before shipping. This adds 2 to 5 working days to the production time.

  • Do not send the template by post unless you are certain of the shipping method
  • We do not return templates after use
  • If you have multiple units, keep a copy of the template for future orders

What To Do If You Don't Have A Template Yet

If you are ordering a custom unit and don't have a template, we can still proceed with your measurements.

Provide the length from your hairline to the crown, the width across the forehead, and the depth from the hairline to the back of your head.

We will use this to create a base that fits your head, but a template gives a more accurate result.

  • Stock units are often 8 by 10 inches - if you are between sizes, a template is the best way to get the right fit
  • If you are unsure, send a photo of your head from the front and side to help us estimate the shape

Template Use For Stock Units

Even if you are buying a stock unit, making a template helps you check the fit before you wear it.

Cut the base down to your template size before the first fitting. This is a free service we offer when you send the template with your order.

It ensures the unit sits right on your head and avoids the need to return it.

  • Cutting the base down adds 2 to 5 working days to the dispatch time
  • We recommend doing this before the first wear to avoid discomfort
  • The cut edge is sealed to prevent fraying
FAQ

Questions On This Topic

How do I make a template if I don't know my head shape?

Use a soft measuring tape to mark your hairline, crown, and back of head. Trace the shape on paper or fabric, following the natural edge of your hair. Take a clear photo and send it to us.

Can I use a photo instead of a physical template?

Yes. Send a clear photo of your head from the front and side, with your hairline marked. We can use this to estimate the shape, but a physical template gives a more accurate fit.

Do you keep the template after I send it?

No. We use it to cut the base and do not return it. Keep a copy for future orders if you plan to reorder.

How long does it take to cut the base to my template?

Cutting the base down adds 2 to 5 working days to the dispatch time. This is included when you send your template with the order.

Can I send a template for a stock unit?

Yes. We will cut the base to your template size before shipping. This is a free service and helps ensure the unit fits your head exactly.

Do you accept templates from other brands?

Yes. We accept templates from any source as long as they are clear, flat, and show the full head shape with labels.
