Shear Beam S Type And Column Load Cells Compared

Four structures cover nearly every weighing build. Choosing the wrong one creates mounting problems that no amount of calibration will fix.

Single Point Aluminium

Single point cells take the whole platform on one cell and tolerate off centre loading within a published platform size. That size limit is the whole point: the L6D range is rated to a 250 x 350 mm platform, the L6E and L6N to 400 x 400 mm, and the L6T and L6G to 600 x 600 mm. Build a bigger deck on the same cell and you get corner errors that trimming cannot remove. Capacities run from 2.5 kg up to 1000 kg.

Single Shear Beam

Shear beam cells sit under each corner of a platform or floor scale and are the workhorse of industrial weighing. They are low profile, easy to mount and available in alloy steel for general use or stainless steel where corrosion matters. The H8C covers 0.5 t to 10 t in alloy steel with OIML and NTEP approval, and the B8D covers a similar range in stainless steel.

Double Shear Beam

Double shear beam cells are the heavier relative of the single beam, used where a truck or railway scale puts very high loads through a small number of mounting points. The HM9B covers 10 t to 50 t, hermetically welded and nickel plated for outdoor life. Where a weighbridge is not using column cells, this is normally the alternative.

S Type For Tension

S type cells work in tension, compression or both, which makes them the natural choice for crane scales, hanging hoppers, belt scales and mechanical scale conversions. The H3 family covers 25 kg to 30 t and 100 lb to 20 klb, and the DEE and DEF variants cover 100 kg to 5 t for crane, belt and blending duty.

Column Cells For Weighbridges

Column cells carry very high compression loads with an anti reversal design and good self aligning behaviour, which is what a weighbridge deck needs as vehicles roll across it. The HM14C covers 10 t to 50 t in alloy steel and the BM14C covers 0.5 t to 50 t in stainless steel with OIML approval.

Quick Selection Table

Bench and pricing scales up to a 600 x 600 mm platform: single point aluminium. Platform and floor scales from 0.5 t to 10 t: single shear beam. Crane, hopper and belt weighing: S type. Truck and railway scales: column or double shear beam. Anything washed down or exposed to salt: the stainless steel version of whichever structure you chose.

Questions About This Guide

Can I use a shear beam cell in tension?

No. Shear beam cells are designed for compression through a defined loading point. Use an S type cell where the load hangs.

Why do single point cells have a platform size limit?

The cell compensates for off centre loading only within the geometry it was compensated for. A larger deck applies a larger moment than the compensation covers, which shows up as corner error.

Are stainless cells worth the extra cost?

In wet, salty or chemically aggressive areas, yes. In a dry warehouse an alloy steel cell with the same accuracy class will last just as long for less money.
