Plain Weave and Twill Weave

In a plain weave each weft wire passes alternately over and under each warp wire, and warp and weft wires are the same diameter. It is the default construction for sieving and general filtration.

In a twill weave each wire passes over and under two wires at a time, which allows a heavier wire in the same mesh count. Twill weave is cheaper than plain weave at the same specification.

Where Dutch Weaves Take Over

A dutch weave uses two wire diameters. Thinner weft wires make the mesh tight and micro, thicker warp wires make the structure robust.

The result is high stability and good performance in high pressure filtration, which is why dutch cloth appears in cartridges and pressure elements rather than in open sieve decks.

Plain Dutch Against Twill Dutch

Plain dutch weave in Wodong stock runs from 8x20 mesh at a 280 micron nominal rating down to 80x400 mesh at 35 micron.

Twill dutch weave carries the fine end, from 30x250 mesh at 53 micron down to 400x2800 mesh at a 1 micron nominal rating.

Choosing Between Them

Open sieving and coarse straining favour plain and twill weave in stainless steel or brass.
