Chinese EV brands are often lumped together in Western automotive coverage. They shouldn't be. The gap between a 2026 Zeekr and a 2026 ultra-cheap mini EV from a niche manufacturer is larger than the gap between a BMW 5-Series and a Dacia Sandero. If you're importing to sell, tier matters — it determines pricing, buyer profile, and what you're taking on as a dealer.
Premium tier — Chinese EVs built like European cars
Cars in this tier are designed, engineered, and positioned to compete with European premium brands — not with other Chinese manufacturers. Interior quality, ride refinement, and brand positioning all reflect that target.
- Zeekr (Geely Holding Group) — Gothenburg design, Chinese manufacturing, 800V/900V platforms. Zeekr 001, 007, X, 9X. Available in EU, UK, Australia, GCC.
- NIO — premium EV with battery-swap network. Strong in China, Nordic Europe. ET5, ET7, ES6, ES8, EC7.
- Polestar (Geely Holding, but considered a Swedish brand) — design-led premium EV. Polestar 2, 3, 4. Sells as a European brand outside China.
- Denza (BYD premium sub-brand) — launched as a joint Mercedes-BYD venture; BYD now has full control. Premium positioning below Porsche/Mercedes EQ.
- Yangwang (BYD flagship sub-brand) — $150K+ luxury flagships. U8 SUV, U9 hypercar. Export footprint minimal; more a showcase than a volume play.
Export buyer profile: GCC executive fleets, European early-adopters, Australian and UK premium retail, Albania-Balkans cross-border luxury channels.
Mainstream tier — the volume zone
Mass-market Chinese EV brands competing directly with Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and each other. This is where most export volume lives.
- Geely (core brand, including Galaxy sub-brand) — EX5, EX2, Starray EM-i, Galaxy L7, Coolray. Most diverse portfolio, strongest export infrastructure in this tier.
- BYD (core brand) — Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Song, Han. World's largest NEV maker by volume.
- Chery (with Omoda sub-brand) — Omoda 5, Omoda E5, Tiggo 8 PHEV. Largest Chinese passenger-car exporter.
- XPeng — G6, P7+, G9. Tech-forward positioning, slotting above mainstream toward premium.
- Leapmotor — T03, C10, C11, C16. Stellantis-partnered. Aggressive pricing, widening export footprint.
- MG (SAIC) — MG4, MG5, ZS EV, HS PHEV. Treated as a British brand in most export markets.
- Aion (GAC) — Y, S, V, Hyper. Export expanding especially in Thailand and the Middle East.
Export buyer profile: Middle-class retail buyers, fleet operators, first-time EV buyers, ride-hail platforms.
Budget tier — volume at the price floor
Vehicles positioned primarily on price. Targeted at buyers for whom EV is a logical upgrade from a used ICE rather than a premium purchase.
- Geely (entry configurations) — EX2 base, Emgrand.
- Wuling (SAIC-GM-Wuling) — Mini EV, Bingo, Hongguang. Famous for the sub-$5,000 Mini EV in China.
- Chery (entry) — QQ Ice Cream, eQ series.
- Changan (entry) — Lumin, Benben E-Star.
Important caveat: Many of the ultra-budget domestic-only models are not designed for export — they lack homologation packages, crashworthiness certifications, and service infrastructure outside China. The models in this tier that we actually export are the ones that have been specifically homologated for the destination market. Others we decline — see our cheapest Chinese EV buyer's guide for why.
Specialist tier — EREV, commercial, niche
Brands that don't sit cleanly on the premium/mainstream/budget axis because they compete in specific niches.
- Li Auto — EREV (extended-range electric) specialist. L6, L7, L8, L9, Mega. No pure BEV until late 2025.
- Deepal (Changan sub-brand) — EV and EREV mid-size. Focused new-energy brand.
- Voyah (Dongfeng) — premium EREV and BEV. Free, Dream MPV, Zhuiguang.
- AITO (Huawei + Seres partnership) — premium SUV. M5, M7, M9.
- Maxus (SAIC, commercial) — MIFA 9 MPV, T90 EV pickup. Fleet/commercial focus.
How this tier list helps your business
If you're in:
- GCC, Europe, Australia, Albania-Balkans — your highest-margin products are premium tier. Zeekr 007 and 001 are your workhorses.
- Southeast Asia, RHD markets, urban Africa — mainstream tier is the sweet spot. Geely EX5, Zeekr X, BYD Atto 3.
- Central Asia, South Asia, Latin America — mainstream and budget depending on customer segment. Geely EX5 and Starray for middle class, EX2 and Emgrand for entry.
- Nigeria, West Africa, Pakistan — PHEV and hybrid (specialist tier's Deepal EREV, mainstream's Starray EM-i) derisks EV adoption while the charging infrastructure develops.
