Measuring Fabric Weight
How a round cutter turns a piece of fabric into a number you can put in front of a customer.
Why measure at all
Fabric weight in grams per square metre is normally a contracted value. Estimating it by feel is how disputes start. A measured value, recorded, is what settles them.
How the round cutter works
The cutter removes a disc of known area. Weigh the disc on a balance and scale up to one square metre. Many balances used in knitting rooms are calibrated to read the result directly for a standard cutter area.
Sampling
Take samples from the same positions each time, and take more than one across the width. A single sample from the selvedge does not represent the roll.
Keeping results comparable
Use the same cutter area, the same balance and the same sampling positions. Comparability between shifts is what makes drift visible early.
Looking after the cutter
Rotate the cutting mat and replace it once the surface is scored. A blade riding in an old cut gives a ragged disc edge and an unreliable weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
The weight changed but nothing was adjusted. Why?
Take down tension, feeder delivery and belt tension all drift with wear, and all of them change measured weight.
How many samples per roll?
Follow your own quality standard. Several positions across the width give a far more useful picture than one.
