API V11 Valve Pairs

API V11 Series Tungsten Carbide Ball and Seat

Matched carbide valve pairs for subsurface sucker rod oil well pumps

  • Supplied as a pair. Ball and seat are produced and packed together rather than bought as separate loose items.
  • Sand cut resistance. Carbide faces resist the sand cut that destroys the volumetric efficiency of a sucker rod pump.
  • Blanks for pump builders. Ball and seat blanks are available for shops that lap the sealing faces themselves.

Product Overview

Overview

Tungsten carbide ball and seat as valve pairs in the API V11 series used in subsurface oil well pumps. Both the finished valve pairs and the ball and seat blanks are produced so pump builders can either fit them directly or lap and finish them in their own shop.

Application Scenarios

  • Standing and travelling valves in sucker rod pumps
  • Pump rebuild and workover service
  • Valve pair blanks for pump manufacturers

Problems It Solves

  • Sand cut on ball and seat faces destroys pump volumetric efficiency
  • A leaking valve pair means pulling the rod string and losing production days
  • Ball and seat bought separately do not always lap together correctly
Key Benefits

Why Customers Specify This Product

Supplied as a pair

Ball and seat are produced and packed together rather than bought as separate loose items.

Sand cut resistance

Carbide faces resist the sand cut that destroys the volumetric efficiency of a sucker rod pump.

Blanks for pump builders

Ball and seat blanks are available for shops that lap the sealing faces themselves.

API V11 series reference

Produced to the API V11 series that pump builders already specify.

Materials

Material and Grade

Cemented tungsten carbide consisting of tungsten carbide grain in a cobalt binder. Binder content and grain size are chosen against your load case because hardness and toughness move in opposite directions. Our engineers propose a direction and explain the trade off rather than quoting a grade code you cannot verify. See the grade guide.

How It Is Made

Manufacturing Process and Quality Control

Every part follows the same production route. Critical dimensions are agreed on the drawing so both sides measure the same thing.

1. Powder PreparationBall milling and spray drying to a uniform granulate
2. PressingBlank pressed with machining stock where required
3. Sinter-HIPDensified under isostatic pressure to reduce porosity
4. MachiningGrinding EDM and lapping to the approved drawing
5. InspectionCritical dimensions checked before packing
6. Export PackingProtected packing for air or sea freight
Certifications

Certificate copies and material documentation are supplied on request with your order. We do not publish certificate claims that we cannot show you so ask for exactly what your import or QA process requires and we will confirm what can be provided.

Customization Options
  • Dimensions to your drawing
  • Grade direction matched to the load case
  • Surface condition as sintered ground or lapped
  • Part marking on request
  • Packing adapted to air or sea freight
Compared With Other Options
  • Versus hardened tool steel — far better wear resistance but more brittle so mounting matters
  • Versus other carbide in this range — see the related products below for the closest alternative form
  • Versus a fabricated assembly — a one piece carbide part removes joints and alignment work

Use Guide

Fitting and Service Guide

  • Check the seat is clean and undamaged before fitting. Uneven support is the most common cause of early failure.
  • Use even pressure. Never drive a carbide part into a holder by impact.
  • Follow the interference fit agreed on the drawing rather than adjusting the carbide.
  • Store parts separated and supported. Carbide chips carbide when parts knock together.
  • Log the run time achieved so replacement becomes planned maintenance.

FAQ

API V11 Ball and Seat FAQ

Do you supply the ball and the seat separately?
Both are possible. Finished valve pairs are supplied as matched sets and ball and seat blanks are supplied to pump builders who lap them in house.
Which sizes of the V11 series do you produce?
Sizes are confirmed against your pump specification when you enquire. Send the size list and we will respond with what we can produce.
Why use carbide instead of a hardened steel valve?
Sand laden well fluid cuts softer valve faces which lets the pump lose pressure. Carbide faces resist that erosion for longer in the same duty.
