Carbide Blade Troubleshooting

Reading the symptoms on a carbide blade or slitting disc to find whether the cause is the grade the geometry the mounting or the machine.

Start With the Blade in Front of You

A worn blade carries most of the diagnosis on its own edge. Before changing supplier or grade look at what the edge actually shows.

Common Symptoms and Likely Causes

  • Uniform rounding of the edge. Normal abrasive wear. A more wear resistant direction may help.
  • Small chips along the edge. Often too hard a grade for the loading or an unstable mounting rather than a wear problem.
  • One area worn far more than the rest. Usually alignment. The blade is not loaded evenly across its length.
  • Blade running out of true. Check the bore fit the arbor and the clamping faces before blaming the disc.
  • Braze seat failure on tipped blades. Look at the seat preparation and the brazing process rather than the tip.

Check the Machine Before the Blade

Spindle bearing play worn clamping faces and incorrect clamping torque produce blade symptoms that look like material problems. It is worth eliminating them first because a new blade in the same machine will fail the same way.

What to Send Us

Photographs of the worn edge taken close and in focus are more useful than a description. Add the material being cut the cutting speed the run time achieved and how the blade is clamped.

With that we can say whether the sensible change is the grade the geometry or the machine setup. See carbide blades and carbide saw tips.

FAQ

Troubleshooting Article FAQ

My new blades chip faster than the old ones. What changed?
Chipping usually points at toughness or mounting rather than at wear resistance. Send photos of the chipped edge and describe the clamping and we will comment.
Can carbide blades be reground?
Within limits agreed at drawing stage. Tell us before production if the blade will be reground so enough material is left for the regrind.

Apply This to Your Own Part

Send the drawing or photos of the worn part and we will comment on grade geometry and what is realistic to produce.

Send a drawing or a sample photo on WhatsApp or by email. Files are reviewed by our production engineers, not by a form.
