What This Product Is For
317 stainless steel pipe has very good corrosion resistance and in particular resists pitting in phosphoric and acetic acids. It also has very good intergranular corrosion resistance. It costs more than 316 or 316L because it contains 11 percent nickel minimum against the 10 percent minimum in 316, and that extra alloy content is what buys the additional pitting resistance.
Key Benefits
- Resists pitting in phosphoric and acetic acid, the two media that commonly defeat 316
- Very good intergranular corrosion resistance
- Higher nickel content at 11 percent minimum for a more stable passive film
- Round, square and rectangular sections in both seamless and welded process
- Length options up to 12000 mm reduce the number of field welds
Who It Is For
- Chemical plant engineers upgrading from 316L
- Fertiliser and phosphoric acid plant operators
- Pulp and paper maintenance teams
- Distributors stocking 317 pipe in multiple sections
Problems It Solves
- Pitting failures in 316L piping carrying phosphoric or acetic acid
- Intergranular attack on welded lines
- Structural and pressure requirements met by two different grades on one project
- Long lead times when a failed section has to be replaced quickly
Application Scenarios
- Phosphoric acid production and fertiliser plants
- Acetic acid and organic chemical process lines
- Pulp and paper bleaching circuits
- Flue gas scrubbing where 316L has already failed

- Very good resistance to pitting in phosphoric and acetic acids
- Very good intergranular corrosion resistance
- Seamless and welded process in round, square and rectangular shapes
- Wall thickness 0.6 to 62 mm
Materials
- 317 austenitic stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Seamless piercing and drawing
- Tube welding
- Solution annealing
- Pickling and polishing
Quality Control
- Nickel content confirmed at 11 percent minimum
- Dimensional check on outside size and wall thickness
- Weld seam inspection on welded product
- Surface condition verified as pickled or polished
Customisation Options
- Round, square or rectangular section
- Five standard lengths from 3000 mm to 12000 mm
- Pickled or polished surface
Use Guide
- Move from 316L to 317 when pitting appears in phosphoric or acetic acid service
- Confirm whether the low carbon 317L variant is required for welded work
- Select the length from the five standard options to minimise site joints
- Pickle and passivate welds before returning the line to acid service
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 316 and 316L stainless pipe | 317 costs more because it contains 11 percent nickel minimum against 10 percent in 316, and that buys better pitting resistance in phosphoric and acetic acid |
|---|---|
| 904L stainless pipe | 904L goes further again in reducing acid service, with much higher nickel, molybdenum and a copper addition |
| 2205 duplex pipe | Duplex gives higher strength and chloride resistance, while 317 is the straightforward austenitic step up for acid pitting |
