What This Product Is For
310S, also known as 1.4845 or X8CrNi25-21 under EN and UNS S31008, is the grade used in very high temperature environments. Theoretically it withstands up to 1100 C, and its very high nickel and chromium content is what makes it durable against corrosion at that heat. It is one of the most common heat resistant stainless grades in high temperature applications.
Key Benefits
- Theoretical service capability up to 1100 C, well above general purpose austenitic grades
- Chromium 24.0 to 26.0 percent forms a stable scale in hot oxidising atmospheres
- Solution annealed delivery condition ready for furnace service
- Outside diameter 10 to 1067 mm covers thermocouple sheaths through to furnace ducting
- Polished or mill pickled surface as the application requires

Who It Is For
- Furnace and heat treatment equipment builders
- Boiler and incinerator fabricators
- Plant engineers replacing scaled 304 or 321 hot components
- Buyers specifying 1.4845 or UNS S31008
Problems It Solves
- Scaling and loss of section in general purpose austenitic pipe at furnace temperature
- Short service life on heat treatment fixtures
- Sourcing very large diameter heat resistant pipe
- Confusion between 310, 310S and 310H when ordering
Application Scenarios
- Furnace radiant tubes and retort piping
- Heat treatment plant fixtures and walking beams
- Boiler and incinerator hot gas ducting
- Cement and petrochemical high temperature lines

- Designations 1.4845, X8CrNi25-21 and UNS S31008
- Theoretical temperature capability up to 1100 C
- Supplied solution annealed
Materials
- 310S heat resistant austenitic stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Seamless piercing and drawing
- Tube welding
- Solution annealing
- Pickling and polishing
Quality Control
- Chromium content confirmed within the 24.0 to 26.0 percent range
- Carbon level checked to separate 310, 310S and 310H
- Solution annealed condition verified before shipment
- Dimensions measured against the ordered outside diameter and wall
Customisation Options
- Polished or mill pickled surface
- Cut length within the 1000 to 13000 mm range
- Packing in woven bags or wooden cases
Use Guide
- Confirm the actual operating temperature, since 1100 C is a theoretical ceiling rather than a continuous rating
- Allow for thermal expansion on long hot runs when designing supports
- Weld with a matching high chromium nickel filler
- Specify woven bag or wooden case packing depending on transport handling
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 321 stainless pipe | 321 holds good heat and corrosion resistance around 600 to 700 C, but where that is not enough 310 and 310S are chosen for higher temperatures |
|---|---|
| 310 and 310H | The three differ mainly by carbon level, with 310S the low carbon variant used for general heat resistant service |
| Inconel 600 pipe | Alloy 600 costs more but adds chloride stress corrosion and alkali resistance that 310S does not offer |
