304 is stated explicitly so it can be recorded in your material documentation rather than left as unspecified stainless.

Against unspecified stainless, naming 304 costs nothing and removes an entire class of audit and consistency problem.
Because grades differ substantially in corrosion resistance and in spring behaviour, and because audits ask for the grade.
Where a higher spring temper is needed, as in constant force springs. For general corrosion resistance, 304 is the usual answer.
