It Is Not Paint and It Is Not Plating in a Tank

PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The polished stainless panel goes into a vacuum chamber where titanium is vaporised and deposited as an extremely thin, extremely hard layer bonded into the surface. A gold coloured lacquer sits on top of the metal. A PVD layer is part of it.

Why That Matters in a Bar or a Lobby

Gold coloured paint scuffs on handling, dulls under cleaning and chips at edges where people brush past. A PVD coating takes normal commercial cleaning and daily contact without losing its tone, which is the whole reason it is used on panels within reach of seated guests.

The Base Surface Decides the Result

PVD is thin enough to follow the surface underneath exactly. It cannot hide a scratch, a weld line or an uneven brush direction. Everything that matters about the polish has to be right before the panel goes into the chamber.

Colour Consistency Across a Run

Tone varies slightly between chamber loads, which matters when a feature wall is made of many panels. Panels for one wall should be processed together and matched against a physical reference under daylight rather than described in words.

Cleaning

A soft damp cloth. Abrasive pads will eventually dull a PVD surface, and there is no re-polishing a coating that thin. The good news is that ordinary dirt and fingerprints come off easily.

Where Solid Brass Still Wins

PVD is harder and far more economical over large areas. Solid brass has more depth in the tone and ages in a way a coating does not. For a large feature wall, PVD on stainless is usually the right answer. For a small object where the material itself is the point, brass is.
