The Lobby Cannot Close

Almost every hotel installation happens around live operations. That rules out site fabrication, welding, grinding and anything that generates dust. The piece has to arrive finished, go in on a short overnight window and be bolted or hung to a fixing method agreed in advance.

Ceiling Height Sets the Proportion

Unlike a garden, a lobby gives you a fixed vertical dimension and a fixed approach. A piece that is slightly wrong in scale is obvious to everyone who walks past it every day. Send the ceiling height, the approach axis from the entrance and the position relative to reception.

The Delivery Route Is the Real Constraint

Service doors, lift car dimensions, lift door openings and corner radii on the route usually decide the maximum section size, not the lobby itself. Establish them before design is finalised, because splitting a piece afterwards means putting joints where the form did not want them.

Finish Against Lighting

Lobby lighting is usually warm, directional and often low. A mirror finish reflects the ceiling and whatever is behind the viewer, which can be spectacular or can simply reflect a services soffit. Brushed, hammered and PVD surfaces catch directional light and hold the form. Look at the actual lighting design before choosing.

Contact With Guests

Anything reachable from a seat or a queue will be touched constantly. That is an argument for brushed or textured finishes at low level, and it is also an argument for keeping delicate detail above shoulder height.

Suspended Pieces

Atrium and stairwell suspension raises load, fixing and access questions that need the structural engineer involved early. Suspension details are drawn and agreed before fabrication rather than resolved on the night of installation.

Brand Standards and Colour Matching

Group standards often require a finish matched to an existing scheme. Send a physical sample or a colour reference, and approve a sample before the full piece is coated. Matching from a photograph on a screen is not matching.
