A headband, also called bookbinding tape or book edge tape, is webbing with decorative stitching along its edges. It is applied to the head and tail edges of a trimmed book block to conceal and finish the folded signatures while still revealing the sewing threads, which is where the name comes from.

How It Compares
Linen carries higher strength and durability but is less pliable and may need a second application to lie flat. Cotton goes on in one pass, which is usually the deciding factor on a running line.
Polyester provides relatively lower structural support and we do not recommend it for hardcover binding where durability matters. It has a place on lighter cased stationery.
A woven band with stitched edges shows a genuine textile edge at the head of the block. Printed paper reads flat and wears at the corners.
