How It Compares
Linen carries higher strength and durability but is less pliable and may need a second application to lie flat. Cotton goes on in one pass, which is usually the deciding factor on a running line.
Polyester provides relatively lower structural support and we do not recommend it for hardcover binding where durability matters. It has a place on lighter cased stationery.
A woven band with stitched edges shows a genuine textile edge at the head of the block. Printed paper reads flat and wears at the corners.

It is applied to the head and tail edges of a trimmed book block in hardcover binding. It conceals and finishes the folded sections of the signatures while revealing the sewing threads, and it adds to both the structural integrity and the finished appearance of the book.

Either woven in with a computer jacquard plate, which survives washing and abrasion, or screen printed after weaving, which costs less to set up on short runs.
