How It Compares
Linen carries higher strength and durability but is less pliable and may need a second application to lie flat. Cotton goes on in one pass, which is usually the deciding factor on a running line.
Polyester provides relatively lower structural support and we do not recommend it for hardcover binding where durability matters. It has a place on lighter cased stationery.
A woven band with stitched edges shows a genuine textile edge at the head of the block. Printed paper reads flat and wears at the corners.

Cotton is flexible and easy to adhere, so it is convenient to apply. Linen offers higher strength and durability but is less pliable and may require a second application to achieve a smooth finish. Line speed usually decides it.
Are polyester headbands suitable for hardcover books
Polyester provides relatively lower structural support and is generally not recommended for hardcover binding where higher durability is required. We will say so rather than sell you the cheaper option.
