What IP65 and IP68 actually protect against, where seasonal installations really fail, and how to read an ingress rating on a quotation.
What The Two Digits Mean
An IP rating has two numbers. The first covers solids: 6 is dust tight. The second covers water: 5 is protection against low pressure water jets from any direction, 8 is continuous immersion. So IP65 is dust tight and rain proof, and IP68 is dust tight and immersion rated. For festival lighting almost everything you need sits at IP65.
Why IP65 Is The Working Standard Outdoors
IP65 covers rain, snow and wind-driven spray, which is the real weather exposure for a street motif, a net light on a hedge or a meteor tube in a tree. It does not cover sitting in standing water. That distinction drives how you dress cabling on site more than which product you buy.
Where Seasonal Installations Actually Fail
Not in the middle of a cable. Almost always at a connector. That is why connector construction matters more than the headline rating: joints that are glued and fitted with a rubber ring survive, and push-fit joints with a rubber sleeve over them do not. When comparing quotations, ask how the connector is sealed, not just what the IP number is.
When You Genuinely Need IP68
Neon flex used in exposed signage, anything near water features, and installations where the fitting cannot be inspected. Silicone-bodied neon flex at IP68 can go into positions where you would otherwise need a secondary housing, which is usually where the cost saving comes from.
Temperature Range Matters As Much As Ingress
A product can be perfectly sealed and still fail because the cable went brittle. Wiring rated from -40 C to 60 C covers the practical extremes of the markets festival lighting ships to. Ask for the range explicitly, because it is rarely printed on a quotation unless you request it.
A Short Site Checklist
Dress connectors horizontally, never at the lowest point of a drop. Keep joints off the ground and out of standing water. Leave slack at corners so nothing is under tension. Let a cold coil warm before unrolling it. None of these are product problems, and all of them cause product failures.
