For small tube batches, the time and labor to re-mold the die, adjust the extrusion machine and measure critical dimensions exceed the time needed to produce the tubes themselves. A run of 1000 tubes may take less than half a day to finish after setup, but the setup cost remains the same as for a larger batch.

The Cost Is Driven by Machine Setup, Not Material

The primary cost in low-volume tube production is not the plastic resin or the anti-static additive. It is the labor, time and machine downtime required to prepare the line. This makes small orders economically unviable unless the tube is already in stock.

Custom Tubes Require Dedicated Tooling

Each tube profile—its width, cavity depth, wall thickness and plug fit—requires a specific mold. Reusing an existing mold is only possible if the profile matches exactly. Custom profiles mean new tooling or re-molding, which triggers the full setup process.

If a customer needs a tube that matches a standard profile already in production, the MOQ may be lower or the tube may be available in stock. Otherwise, every new order triggers the full setup cost, which is why the MOQ is set at 10000 pieces as a practical threshold.
