Which NEMA plug do I need?
It follows voltage and current. 5-15P covers 15 A at 125 V, 5-20P is 20 A at 125 V, 6-15P and 6-20P are 250 V, and the 30 A and 50 A patterns serve dryers, ranges and equipment feeds.
What is the difference between SPT, SVT and SJT cable?
SPT is a parallel light duty cord, SVT is a light jacketed cord for portable appliances and SJT is a junior hard service jacketed cord for general duty. Heavier ST, S and SO grades are used where the cord takes abuse.
What does the L number mean?
It identifies the NEMA locking configuration, which sets the voltage, the current rating and the number of poles. L5-30 for example is 30 A at 125 V, while L14-30 is a 30 A four-wire 125/250 V pattern.
Can I get a matching connector on the other end?
Yes. Plug and connector sets are standard in this range.
Which gauge should I choose?
Heavier gauge carries more current with less voltage drop. 16 AWG suits light loads, 14 AWG general use and 12 AWG longer runs or higher loads.
What does the lighted end do?
A small indicator in the outlet body lights when the cord is energised, which makes it obvious that the circuit is live.
