What Each Connector Is For

An RCA or phono connector carries a single video signal on a push fit plug, usually alongside a separate DC power lead. It is the standard on aftermarket monitors, dash recorders and consumer equipment. A 4 pin aviation connector carries video and power together on one round plug with a threaded collar that screws down. It is the standard on commercial vehicle systems.

Vibration Is the Deciding Factor

A push fit connector relies on friction. On a passenger car that is fine. On a rigid truck, a tipper or a piece of site machinery, continuous vibration works a push fit joint loose over weeks, and the symptom the customer reports is an intermittent picture that comes and goes over bumps. A threaded collar removes that failure mode.

Cable Length Changes the Answer Too

Long runs on a bus or an articulated vehicle mean more joints and more places for a push fit to separate. They also mean more voltage drop on the power leg. A combined connector that carries power and video in the same sheath keeps the two together and reduces the number of separate joints on the vehicle.

Mixing the Two Standards

Mixed systems are common because the camera came from one supplier and the screen from another. Adapters exist, but every adapter is another joint in a wet position. The better answer is to fix one standard for the whole order. If your head end is an aftermarket monitor with phono inputs, specify RCA terminated cameras such as our mini dome. If it is a commercial monitor, specify 4 pin aviation throughout.

What to Send Us Before You Order

A photo of the input side of your existing monitor or recorder, and its model number. That is usually enough for us to confirm which termination you need before anything is manufactured, which is far cheaper than discovering it on the vehicle.
