Carbide Strips

Tungsten Carbide Strips and Flat Blanks

Standard 330 mm strips and long strips up to 1800 mm in one piece

  • One piece long edges. Lengths up to 1800 mm avoid butt joints along a long knife or wear edge.

Product Overview

Overview

Tungsten carbide strips are flat blanks used as planing knives cutting edges wear plates and as raw stock for blades and cutters. Our standard strip length is 330 mm and the maximum length we can make is 1800 mm which removes the joints from long knife and wear edges.

Application Scenarios

  • Wood planing and moulding knives
  • Paper board and film slitting edges
  • Wear plates and guide rails on conveying equipment
  • Blank stock for brazed tooling

Problems It Solves

  • Long wear edges have to be joined from short pieces which creates weak seams
  • Steel knife edges round off and leave a torn rather than a cut surface
  • Strip cross sections that are not ground true cause uneven brazing gaps

Why Customers Specify This Product

One piece long edges

Lengths up to 1800 mm avoid butt joints along a long knife or wear edge.

Ground or unground

Choose ground faces when the brazing seat has to be exact or unground blanks when you finish in house.

Stock section flexibility

Width and thickness are produced against your section drawing.

Base stock for blades

The same strips feed our own blade and cutter production.

  • Rectangular cross sections to drawing
  • Ground or as sintered faces
Materials

Material and Grade

Cemented tungsten carbide consisting of tungsten carbide grain in a cobalt binder. Binder content and grain size are chosen against your load case because hardness and toughness move in opposite directions. Our engineers propose a direction and explain the trade off rather than quoting a grade code you cannot verify. See the grade guide.

How It Is Made

Manufacturing Process and Quality Control

Every part follows the same production route. Critical dimensions are agreed on the drawing so both sides measure the same thing.

1. Powder PreparationBall milling and spray drying to a uniform granulate
2. PressingBlank pressed with machining stock where required
3. Sinter-HIPDensified under isostatic pressure to reduce porosity
4. MachiningGrinding EDM and lapping to the approved drawing
5. InspectionCritical dimensions checked before packing
6. Export PackingProtected packing for air or sea freight
Certifications

Certificate copies and material documentation are supplied on request with your order. We do not publish certificate claims that we cannot show you so ask for exactly what your import or QA process requires and we will confirm what can be provided.

Customization Options
  • Dimensions to your drawing
  • Grade direction matched to the load case
  • Surface condition as sintered ground or lapped
  • Part marking on request
  • Packing adapted to air or sea freight
Compared With Other Options
  • Versus hardened tool steel — far better wear resistance but more brittle so mounting matters
  • Versus other carbide in this range — see the related products below for the closest alternative form
  • Versus a fabricated assembly — a one piece carbide part removes joints and alignment work

Use Guide

Fitting and Service Guide

  • Check the seat is clean and undamaged before fitting. Uneven support is the most common cause of early failure.
  • Use even pressure. Never drive a carbide part into a holder by impact.
  • Follow the interference fit agreed on the drawing rather than adjusting the carbide.
  • Store parts separated and supported. Carbide chips carbide when parts knock together.
  • Log the run time achieved so replacement becomes planned maintenance.

FAQ

Carbide Strips FAQ

What is the longest carbide strip you can produce?
The standard length is 330 mm and the maximum length we can make is 1800 mm. Longer edges are covered by joining several pieces which we will discuss before you order.
Do you supply strips ground on all faces?
Tell us which faces matter. Strips can be supplied as sintered or ground on the faces that form the brazing seat and the cutting edge.
Can you cut strips into finished blades?
Yes. Strips are the base stock for our own carbide blades and cutters so a strip order can continue into finished blade production.
