Do I have to countersink the hole first?
In steel, yes, or the head will sit proud and pre-load the joint unevenly. In timber and board the head will usually pull itself in.
Which recess is best for a countersunk head?
Pozidriv or Torx, because a countersunk head is often driven hard at the end of its travel and that is where a plain Phillips cams out.
