Carriage Bolts
Carriage bolts — a domed head over a square neck that locks into the timber or the punched hole, so the bolt can be tightened from the nut end alone with no tool on the head side.

In timber the neck pulls itself into a round hole. In steel the hole is normally punched square to match.
