Configuration Guide

Configure a Stereo Inspection Bench

A stereo inspection bench is five decisions: the head, the zoom body, the stand, the illumination and the imaging chain. Get them in that order and the parts fit; buy them separately and they usually do not.

Configure a Stereo Inspection Bench
Stage By Stage

Each Decision And What It Costs To Get Wrong

  1. Define the task

Problem. A bench specified by magnification alone ends up with too little clearance or too small a field.

How it is solved. Start from the smallest feature you must resolve and the largest part you must see at once. That pair sets the zoom range, not a single magnification figure.

  2. Choose the head

Problem. A binocular head cannot feed a camera, and a trinocular head is wasted if nothing is ever recorded.

How it is solved. Binocular for pure hand work. Trinocular where images are recorded, shared or attached to inspection records.

  3. Set the working distance

Problem. Tools collide with the optics because the objective was chosen last.

How it is solved. Decide what must fit under the head, then pick the auxiliary objective. Working distances in the range run from about 30mm to 165mm.

  4. Pick the stand

Problem. A pillar stand cannot reach a large assembly and a boom arm wastes bench space on small parts.

How it is solved. Pillar and track stands for parts that come to the microscope, boom and articulated arms for assemblies that cannot move.

  5. Add illumination

Problem. Built-in stage light does nothing for opaque parts.

How it is solved. Ring light for even coverage, segmented or directional light for texture, cold light source where heat or precise placement matters.

  6. Close the imaging chain

Problem. The camera sees a cropped, vignetted circle instead of the visual field.

How it is solved. Match the C-mount adapter reduction to the camera sensor size. Confirm sensor format and eyepiece field before ordering.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy the head and stand separately?

Yes. Heads, focusing mounts, stands, Barlow lenses and eyepieces are each listed as separate items so a bench can be built, moved or rebuilt piece by piece.

What do I need to tell you to get a complete quote?

The smallest feature you inspect, what has to fit under the optics, whether images are recorded, and the bench space available. Those four answers fix the whole configuration.
