Transmitted or Reflected
Transmitted light passes through the sample and suits anything thin and translucent: slides, sections, films. Reflected light bounces off the surface and is the only option for metal, plastic, boards and assemblies. Instruments are built for one or the other, sometimes both.
Ring Light for Even Coverage
A ring of LEDs around the objective lights the sample from every direction at once, which removes the single hard shadow a gooseneck lamp throws. It is the default choice for inspection of components and assemblies.
Directional and Segmented Light for Texture
Perfectly even light flattens surface texture. Switching off part of a segmented ring reintroduces a shadow that reveals scratches, engraving and tool marks. A fibre-guided cold light source does the same with more precise placement.
Coaxial Light for Flat Specular Surfaces
On mirror-like surfaces, light arriving from the side reflects away from the objective and the surface reads dark. Coaxial illumination sends light down the optical axis so it returns to the objective, which is how laser marking on polished metal becomes readable.
Why LED and Cold Light Replaced Halogen
Heat distorts small parts, softens adhesives and tires operators. LED and fibre-guided cold light deliver the intensity without the heat, and they hold colour temperature as brightness is adjusted.

An adjustable ring light covers most of it. Bright metal needs the brightness down, dark plastic needs it up, which is why fixed-output lamps struggle.
